Have you noticed how many people are not cooking these days? Why? With the ever increasing number of prepared foods, so easy to pop into the microwave, fewer and fewer are taking the time to cook. The key word here is TIME. Most families have both parents working, out of necessity, and have precious little time to devote to cooking. There is not much inclination to slave over a hot stove after an eight hour day. Add to that a colicky baby, or helping kids with homework, laundry, housework, church service, or ad infinitum. I must admit, that when I come home tired from work, the last thing I feel like doing is preparing a meal, but wait......isn't that what we're working for in the first place, to provide for our family?
Most of us would agree that fresh meals are healthier, and less expensive, no matter how convenient that frozen Lasagna is. As a newlywed, and for years after, I spent a great deal of time chopping, slicing, grating or shredding, in order to cook 'from scratch', even if it meant eating later. (My husband is incredibly patient). I heard other people rave about their food processors, but without the funds to purchase a new one, the prospect of getting one did not seem likely. Overwhelming as it was, I continued to chop, and slice, and grate, and shred, or settled for frozen burritos.
Finally, we inherited a small, cheap food processor from a friend. Being very anxious to try it, I was delighted to find that I could quickly chop, slice, grate or shred onions, carrots, celery, peppers, and cheese. From homemade pizza to salads, my family gets far more freshly made food than they used to.
During the holidays, time is an extra special premium. Relatives that we seldom see come from distant cities to visit, perhaps for the last time. How much nicer it has been for us to spend less time cooking, and more time doing other activities--games, outings, or just visiting. Not to say that we don't enjoy cooking together too, but having the means to do the cooking quickly enables us to enjoy the other activities much more. Preparing a holiday meal becomes much less exhausting.
A final note--Don't waste your time with junk. For years we limped along with an inefficient mixer of lesser quality than what we could have used. If it takes getting a second hand machine, get the most efficient kitchen machines available.
